HB+BONN: FOR THE HOMIES

To celebrate Homebase Skateshop’s 21st Birthday this year it was only right we worked with our homies at Bonn Place Brewing to develop “HOMIES,” a Citrus Shandy Ale that combines Bonn’s Mooey Pub Ale with the unique citrus flavors of Calamansi, the Philippine Lime: the perfect summertime adult beverage for all our homies who have been supporting us since 2002.

We will be throwing a 21st birthday block party behind Bonn Place Brewing at 6pm on Saturday, July 29th. We will be closing down part of Mechanic Street behind Bonn Place, located on the corner of 310-14 Taylor Street & Mechanic Street in South Bethlehem.

There will be beer, food, music and skateboarding so pull up with all the homies.

  • Filipino BBQ served up by THE TASTESMOKERS & INIHAW
  • Music by The NITE LITERS DJs, LLC
  • The Homebase Skateboarding Keg Olympics for prizes & glory

HOW "HOMIES" WAS BREWED BY JOSH OF BONN PLACE

"Because this brew is a "Mooey Shandy", the brewing process is similar to the English Pale Ale of mashing, lautering, boiling, and fermentation we use for Mooey. The difference in the process is using the fresh Calamansi fruit.  We were able to utilize the peel in our whirlpool and puree the flesh then add it to the conditioning portion of the fermentation.  We also used Potassium Sorbate in the brewing process which prevents yeast cells from propagating and causing re-fermentation.  Also, we decided to use a large dose of Centennial Hops instead of Cascade Hops which is traditionally used in the English Pale Ale.  Centennial Hops provide a more of a citrus punch than Cascade.  We really want to highlight the fruit in the brew.  When you're smelling or tasting the beer, we want you to know that it has a unique citrus quality brought forth by the Calamansi." - Josh

    WHAT IS CALAMANSI?

    Calamansi fruit

Native to Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines and Malaysia, the fruit is sometimes called a Panama orange, Philippine lime or calamansi lime. The flavor profile is a cross between lemon, tangerine, and passion fruit. It is super tart with a slight floral finish.

Technically, it’s a hybrid citrus plant derived from kumquat and mandarin orange parents. It’s best known as a small round fruit, about one-third the size of a lime. It is ubiquitous in Filipino cooking, often used as a garnish or key ingredient, and popular as a sweet and tart juice.

The fresh Calamansi we used was grown in New Jersey by Flavors by Bhumi
